In honor of International Women's Day on March 8th, we dedicate this newsletter to three important, female designers. Hailing from different parts of the globe, Johanna Grawunder, Patricia Urquiola and Paola Lenti has each struggled and succeeded to find prominence in the design world. We are lucky to have newly on display several pieces from each of these women: "Chaises for the new millenium" by Johanna Grawunder, "Shangai tip" and "Antibody" by Patricia Urquiola, and a collection of indoor and outdoor rugs by Paola Lenti.

Don't miss the side links to view a project by Johanna Grawunder in Sicily, Italy, an interview with Patricia Urquiola and an article on the female influence on lighting.

Natural and man-made materials undergo sophisticated processes to become yarns and fabrics, which are exclusive, precious and durable. This production process leads to the creation of a range of rugs and seating furniture for interior and exterior use.
Quality, careful workmanship, attention to detail and consulting service to the clientele are the added value of these unique and avant-garde furnishings which are distributed in the most prestigious showrooms in Italy and worldwide.

Rugs from the Paola Lenti collection can be seen at DZINE. Please visit PAOLA LENTI website to see more of her collection.

DZINE introduces PAOLA LENTI

Paola Lenti was born in 1958 in Alessandria Italy,  where she completed classical studies. She later moved to Milan and graduated from Milan's Polytecnico. In the early eighties she started  working as an image coordinator and graphic designer for several events and fashion companies.
In 1994 she founded the company, Paola Lenti, located in Italy's leading furniture district Meda, near Milan.
In a few years, the company has become  an international reference point for textile innovation in the design world, and has been recognized for its dedication to research, experimentation and for its entrepreneurial dynamism. The singular approach to materials and forms and the original interpretation of color combine to make Paola Lenti’s collections unique.

JOHANNA GRAWUNDER

Johanna Grawunder is a designer and architect based in Milan, Italy and San Francisco. She was born in San Diego, California in 1961. Graduating in 1984 from California Politechnic State University in San Luis Obispo with a bachelor's degree in Architecture, she completed her final year of studies in Florence, Italy and in 1985 moved to Milan. She worked with Sottsass Associati from 1985-2001, becoming a partner in 1989. At the Sottsass Studio she was involved primarily with architecture and interiors, co-designing with Ettore Sottsass, many of the firm’s most prestigious projects.

JG

In 2001 she left Sottsass Associati and opened her own full-time studio in Milan and San Francisco traveling back and forth. In the so-called new world given to us by the information revolution, one can theoretically live and work from anywhere. But, in fact, place matters. Being based in San Francisco, the capital of technology, and Milan, the capital of design, makes for an interesting and fertile dichotomy. Her works spans a broad range of projects and scales, from architecture and interiors, to limited edition furniture and lights for various galleries in Europe and the USA. She also collaborates on products with a few select companies including Flos, Boffi, B&B Italia, and Salviati.

PATRICIA URQUIOLA

We all know who Patricia is, so instead of a biography we thought of an article that appeared a couple of years ago on Designboom.

The ideal house.

"An ideal does not exist in reality. It only exists in our imagination", says Patricia Urquiola. "As soon as it becomes reality, immediately a new ideal is created." Correspondingly, she understands the design of her house as not-ideal and simply wishes to create an ephemeral "ideal moment."
In simple terms: everyone who enters the house will perceive different elements as ideal and allow himself to be inspired by them. The basic principle is the open design of living room, bedroom or dining room which the observer can fill out according to his own wishes the creative leitmotiv : the house becomes a "housse", which is the french word for a (furniture) cover.

Shangai tip

Urquiola

A scaffolding envelops a house, the way an overcoat envelops its wearer. The house is "clothed" by an artistically deformed industrial scaffolding, similar to that on a building site. This, in turn, is sheathed in a textile skin made of macro macramé or similar knotted fabrics. Cutouts at the bottom end form the entrance. The inner workings are characterized by the hanging elements.
Seating elements, the bed, articles for everyday use, accessories: everything appears - fixed on cables - to be floating in space. On cable lines every imaginable object - or even the people themselves - can be moved from one level to another.
